During the late 19th century in England, a clothing designer by the name John E. Brooks (the oldest men’s clothier is US History) was at a polo match when he was introduced to the type of garment these polo players were wearing and fell in love with the style. These initial garments were of a long sleeve polo shirt style. Inspired by this style, he quickly created his own mens polo shirt that was birthed and given to the world in 1896.
The modern golf shirt or short sleeve polo shirt that we know today, was made popular by a famous French tennis player in 1933, who donned a rolled up sleeve polo shirt and decorated the left chest with his signature embroidered logo, a small crocodile. This style would change the course of polo shirts for men and from this point on the polo shirt would be widely adopted by college sports teams. This informed a new style in the fashionwear industry called sportswear.
